Environment Management System (EMS)
ISO 14001 was first published in 1996 and specifies requirements for an environmental management system. The ISO 14001 sets requirements for "environmental management". This means what the organization does to:
- Improve organisation’s environmental performance by reducing harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities,
ISO 14001 is standard for environmental management. ISO 14001 specifies a set of environmental management requirements to help all types of organizations to
- protect the environment,
- prevent pollution, and
- Improve their environmental performance.
ISO 14001 is also used as a tool to improve environmental performance, control costs and reduce risk.
Other key improvements in the new version include:- A greater commitment from leadership
- An increased alignment with strategic direction
- Greater protection for the environment, with a focus on proactive initiatives
- More effective communication, driven through a communications strategy
- Life-cycle thinking, considering each stage of a product or service, from development to end-of-life.
- organisation’s environmental policy,
- identification of Environmental Aspect and Impact due to its activities,
- prepare framework for identification of significant aspect
- environmental objectives & targets to reduce environmental impact
- Environment management programs to meet objectives & targets,
- Compliance to legal , statutory & other requirements,
- Checking effectiveness at regular interval and take corrective & preventive actions.
SCOPE & APPLICATION
This International Standard specifies requirements for a framework for an environmental management system and it applies to those environmental aspects where an organization has control or influence. This standard does not specify criteria for environmental performance.
ISO 14001 requirements are intended to be incorporated into any environmental management system. The extent of the implementation depends on activities carried out by the organisation, environmental policy, product and services of the organization.
This International Standard is applicable to any organization that wishes to implement and environmental management system including:
- Single location to large multi-national companies
- Manufacturing and Engineering Industries
- Process and Service Industries
- High risk companies to low risk service organizations
ISO 14001 REQUIREMENTS
ISO 14001 was designed by Environmental management Technical Committee ISO/TC 207, Subcommittee SC 1, Environmental management systems. The Third edition 14001:2015 cancels and replaces the second edition ISO 14001:2004, which has been technically revised.

The ISO 14064 standard is the latest additions to the ISO 14000 family of International Standards for environmental management. The ISO 14064 standards provide government and industry with an integrated set of tools for the quantification and reporting of emissions and emissions reductions as well as supporting programs aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and emissions trading.
What is ISO 14064?
ISO 14064 comprises three standards, respectively detailing specifications and guidance for GHG Inventories, GHG projects and for their validation and verification.
The first part specifies requirements for designing and developing organization or entity-level GHG inventories. The second part details requirements for quantifying, monitoring and reporting emission reductions and removal enhancements from GHG projects. The third part provides requirements and guidance for the conducting of GHG information validation and verification.
Unlike the GHG Project Protocol, which has specific guidelines on what tools and accounting methods to use, ISO 14064 gives guidance on what to do but does not spell out the exact requirements. The requirements are usually spelled out only in general terms. For example, ISO points out that additionality needs to be taken into account but does not require a specific tool or additionality test to be used. These would be defined by the GHG programme or regulation under which ISO 14064 is used. ISO 14064 does not focus on co-benefits.
Implementing ISO 14064 is Intended to Achieve the Following Benefits:- Promote consistency, transparency and credibility in GHG quantification, monitoring, reporting and verification;
- Enable organisations to identify and manage GHG-related liabilities, assets and risks;
- Facilitate the trade of GHG allowances or credits;
- Support the design, development and implementation of comparable and consistent GHG schemes or programs
ISO 14067:2013 (Carbon Foot Print)
ISO/TS 14067:2013 specifies principles, requirements and guidelines for the quantification and communication of the carbon footprint of a product (CFP), based on International Standards on life cycle assessment (ISO 14040 and ISO 14044) for quantification and on environmental labels and declarations (ISO 14020, ISO 14024 and ISO 14025) for communication.
Benefits
- Providing requirements for the methods to be adopted in assessing the CFP;
- Facilitating the tracking of performance in reducing GHG emissions;
- Assisting in the creation of efficient and consistent procedures to provide CFP information to interested parties;
- Providing a better understanding of the CFP such that opportunities for GHG reductions may be identified;
- Providing CFP information to encourage changes in consumer behaviour which could contribute to reductions in GHG emissions through improved purchasing, use and end-of-life decisions;
- Providing correct and consistent communication of CFPs which supports comparability of products in a free and open market;
- Enhancing the credibility, consistency and transparency of the quantification, reporting and communication of the CFP;
- Facilitating the evaluation of alternative product design and sourcing options, production and manufacturing methods, raw material choices, recycling and other end of life processes;
- Facilitating the development and implementation of GHG management strategies and plans across product life cycles as well as the detection of additional efficiencies in the supply chain;
Responsible Care Management System
RS 14001:2015 combines the requirements of Responsible Care Management System (RCMS) and ISO 14001:2015. It is an integrated health, safety, security and environmental management system based on the principles of Responsible Care and the Policy-Plan-Do-Check-Act continual improvement cycle.
RC represents self imposed ethical commitment for better safety performance and responsible management of chemicals throughout their life cycle.
The standard consists of total 7 Codes of management practice for evaluation to award RC logo to the member industries, which include
Each Code has certain attributes for compliance, which are grouped in to 4 elements for the purpose of clarity i.e. management, technology, facilities and people related attributes.

AWS WATER STEWARDSHIP
“The AWS Standard is applicable globally to all organisations and industrial sectors, independent of their size and operational complexity, including agriculture, and non-profit sectors. The focus of the Standard is the operational site and its local water catchment, but with a broader goal to include indirect water use in the supply chain.”
The Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) is the first comprehensive global standard defining the responsible use of water for individual facilities or group sites within a single watershed. The comprehensive standard goes beyond setting minimum thresholds for compliance and provides detailed guidance for water users of any size. AWS Core, Gold, or Platinum Level Certification is for those seeking independent assurance of responsible water governance, a sustainable water balance, good water quality, healthy water-related sites and values, safe water, sanitation and hygiene
Benefits of implementing the AWS Standard Implementing the AWS Standard can bring about many benefits for a site. It supports them to: Understand water dependencies and impacts Mitigate operational and supply chain water risks Ensure responsible water procedures are in place Build relationships with local water-related stakeholders Address challenges shared with others in the catchment
